Today’s reading: 1 Peter 1:13

One verse and its instruction jumped off the page at me this morning–1 Peter 1:13:

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

What an important reminder of how preparing our minds is a necessary component of living rightly for God. Preparing our minds for action is similar to us preparing our physical body for a race or activity. We wouldn’t sign up for a marathon and expect to be able to simply show up and run 26.2 miles well, or even in its entirely. The same is true for our minds when it comes to our spiritual journey and living fully for Christ. Our minds our powerful, and I’ve learned from experience that the thoughts I put in my mind will influence and direct my actions.

That being the case, being proactive about preparing for serving God is a must. That preparing starts with filling our minds with God’s Word. The next steps are considering, anticipating, visualizing the experience, and thinking about the outcome and benefits to others and ourselves. And the more we think through taking whatever the specific action God is placing on our heart to do, the more excited, motivated and prepared we become to take that action.

Would you say that you are in the habit of “preparing your mind for action” as a Christ follower? What does your “preparing” routine look like? Why is taking in and considering God’s Word such a key component to our taking right action? Tami
