Today’s reading: James 5:12

“But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.” (James 5:12)

This verse always draws my attention because it contains a message that I strive to live by: “let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no.” It’s a call for us to be truthful, responsible and respectful of others in all of our dealings with people. Talk by itself is cheap. We should mean what we say and follow through on our commitments. And when we do, it sends a positive and encouraging message to those who are watching about being a follower of Christ.

On a scale of 1-10, how would you say you’re doing in letting your “yes” or “no” mean exactly that? Do you think other people view you as a person who follows through on your word? Are there any outstanding commitments you need to follow through on? Tami
