Today’s reading: Judges 15:1-20

After things settles down from the volatile (turned deadly) wedding feast and celebration, Samson decides to give it another go with his Philistine wife. But when he arrives at her home, he discovers that she’s been given to another man. This prompts a series of actions against the Philistines–the burning of their fields and then the killing of 1,000 men with the jawbone of a donkey.

Samson was, without a doubt, a unique and unusual individual, and his methods of dealing with the Philistines were definitely unconventional. With Samson, we don’t see a military mindset like we’ve seen with some of the prior judges. There’s no planning or any sort of strategizing for engaging in battle. Even his weapons–foxes tied together with torches of fire and the jawbone of a donkey–are remarkably out of the ordinary.
