Today’s reading: Proverbs 13:3

“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.”

Proverbs 13:3 especially stood out to me this week in light of current events in our country. It’s so easy to respond based on our emotions and say whatever we are feeling. But more often than not, our unbridled responses don’t serve us well. They hurt other people (many times those who are close to us) and they can paint us in a negative light and damage our witness. Tha’s not to say that we can’t speak truth or that shouldn’t stand up for what we know is truth. But we must seek God’s direction and ask Him to help us be wise and discerning as we respond in love.

How do you discern when to hold your tongue and when it’s right to speak out? And when you do choose to speak, what helps you guard your words? Is it your practice to pause and pray before responding? Tami
